The World's First Ultra-large Modular Data Center Contracted by CIMC was officially Put into Operation
Recently, the Malaysia 2312 data center project, the world's first ultra-large modular data center, was officially put into operation in Johor, Malaysia.
The project was undertaken by Shenzhen CIMC Construction Co., Ltd.*(深圳中集建造有限公司) ("CIMC Construction"), a subsidiary of CIMC Building Technology Co., Ltd. under CIMC, covering an area of 240,000 sq.m. As an iconic data center in Malaysia, the project integrates functions such as big data processing, computing power support, cloud computing services and efficient information management to provide strong infrastructure support for data processing business and greatly improve the safe storage and efficient processing ability of data.
As an integrated solution provider, CIMC Construction has thoroughly implemented the CIMC Standards in important processes such as the design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of the data center module, as well as integrated the world's leading manufacturing, construction and management concepts, so as to produced brand new industrialised and standardised products for the local community.
It is understood that the project will be handed over completely in November 2024. It consists of three data hall buildings with a gross floor area of approximately 29,300 sq.m. The project includes a total of 833 modules, with an IT load of about 60MW and a total of 3,168 cabinets. The project adopts a direct expansion refrigeration system, with the refrigerating capacity of per air conditioner reaching 212KW and the annual PUE of only 1.4, which greatly improves the energy efficiency level.
Previously, under the condition that traditional construction methods were generally adopted in Malaysia, it usually took about 18 months for a data center project to be put into operation. However, CIMC Construction adopted modular construction technology, which enabled the project to be quickly put into operation in a short period of less than one year. It is worth mentioning that the construction cost per tile of the project is comparable to that of the traditional steel structure plus skid solution, and it can save more than four months of construction period, further optimizing economic benefits and construction efficiency.
At the same time, in order to cope with the increasing demand for computing power, the team of CIMC Construction also fully considered the flexibility of future capacity expansion. The modular design enables the data center to be replicated and expanded according to specific customer requirements. In addition, the highly pre-fabricated feature of the modularized building, which incorporates the concepts of green energy saving and sustainable development throughout the entire construction process, is leading the way to the future direction of green buildings around the world..
Currently, the first and second buildings of the 2312 data center project have been deployed and put into operation; the third building will also be officially put into operation soon. This indicates that CIMC Construction has layed large and reliable shared data processing infrastructure in Southeast Asia, which will meet the data processing needs of the neighboring markets in the next 5-10 years..
You Deqiang, the General Manager of CIMC Construction, said, "The smooth operation of the Malaysia 2312 Modular Data Center has once again demonstrated the outstanding value of modular buildings in the construction of large-scale data centers. The data center construction model with rapid construction, excellent quality and controllable cost will lead the trend of the new generation of large-scale data center construction."
It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the air-cooled technology adopted in this project, CIMC Construction has provided the data center construction industry with more diversified options in terms of the high-density computing application scenarios, the industry's first 7-meter-high module solutions combining air-cooled + chilled water liquid-cooled technology, as well as the skid solutions combining with traditional civil construction.
According to McKinsey's latest report, the construction scale of the global data center will reach US$49 billion by 2030, of which the construction of large COLO data centers will become the mainstream. In today's era of explosive growth of computing power, the modular building technology of CIMC Construction has provided all-round basic support for technology giants, not only accelerating the realization of data centers' value, but also highlighting the significance of cornerstone work in the development of the global digital economy.
In the future, CIMC Construction will continue to adhere to the “CIMC Standards”, devote itself to the innovation in the field of modularized construction, and provide global customers with more high-quality, efficient and sustainable construction solutions, aiming to address the challenges of high-density IT energy deployment and changes in demand. Besides, it also provides higher-quality services to support the innovative business needs of global customers and to promote the prosperous development of the global digital economy.
