CIMC Delivered Two of the World’s Largest LNG Bunker Vessels in Half a Year, Supporting the Decarbonization of Water Transport in the World


On June 8, CIMC Enric Holdings Limited (“CIMC Enric”, stock code: 3899.HK), a subsidiary of CIMC Group announced that Nantong CIMC SinoPacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (“CIMC SinoPacific Offshore & Engineering”), its subsidiary, successfully delivered the second world’s largest 20,000m³ LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunker vessel to Avenir LNG (a UK company) in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. This is the second LNG bunker vessel delivered by CIMC SinoPacific Offshore & Engineering to Avenir LNG this year, and the delivery was still carried out by “cloud delivery.”

It is known that the 20,000m³ LNG bunker vessel delivered is the largest LNG bunker vessel in the world at present. Its cargo tank is a C-shaped double-flap tank, with a total length of 159.9 meters and a width of 24 meters. It features safety, low evaporation rate and environmental protection. It represents a technical sublimation of LNG carriers, being capable of transporting LNG and filling up other ships and terminals with LNG. The vessel was built under the general contracting by CIMC Pacific Offshore, with the liquid tank and cargo system designed and built by CIMC Pacific Offshore, and the body completed with Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard Co., Ltd.

Avenir LNG, a joint venture between Stolt-Nielsen, the world’s largest chemical ship owner, and Hoegh LNG and Golar LNG, both of which are famous enterprises, is specialized in small and medium-sized LNG transportation and LNG fueling business. CIMC Pacific Offshore is a leader in the market segment of small and medium-sized liquefied gas carriers, with rich experience in the design and manufacture of gas carriers and good delivery performance. It has delivered more than 40 LPG/LEG/LNG and other gas carriers and bunker vessels. It ranks first in terms of global market share. It can provide customers with professional liquefied gas transportation solutions featuring energy saving, environmental protection and technological innovation.

In 2021, there was great progress in using LNG as a marine fuel and for decarbonization (the comprehensive pollution emissions can be reduced by 70% by using LNG as a marine fuel). The number of orders for LNG-fueled ships hit a record high, and the filling infrastructure was also expanded rapidly. DET NORSKE VERITAS (“DNV”) predicts that by 2024, the market demand for LNG fuel will triple to more than 3.5 million tons. To support this demand, the construction of LNG filling infrastructure will continue to be promoted. According to DNV, there are currently 33 LNG bunker vessels in operation, and 42 LNG bunker vessels are being ordered or under discussion.
